What is Aldactone?

Aldactone is an FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) approved medication distributed by Searle LLC, a division of Pfizer Inc. It is classed as a potassium-sparing diuretic and is used to treat heart failure, high blood pressure (hypertension), or hypokalemia.

Aldactone is also used for the treatment of fluid retention (edema) in people with congestive heart failure, cirrhosis of the liver, or nephrotic syndrome (a kidney disorder). It can also be used to treat or diagnose a condition in which you have excessive aldosterone in your body.

What doses of Aldactone are available?

Aldactone is available in tablet form, in the following doses: 25 mg.

Aldactone active ingredients

Aldactone contains spironolactone as the active ingredient. It belongs to a class of drugs called aldosterone antagonists.

Aldactone side effects

The most common side effects of spironolactone in clinical trials include:

  • Breast tenderness and swelling
  • Drowsiness
  • Dizziness, headaches
  • Stomach upset, diarrhea
  • Nausea, vomiting

In rare instances, Aldactone can cause more serious side effects. These can include:

  • Little or no urination
  • High potassium levels
  • Other electrolyte imbalances
  • Signs of kidney problems
  • Breast pain, breast enlargement (gynecomastia) in men
  • Signs of infection

Aldactone drug interactions

Aldactone can interact with other medications. These include:

  • Colchicine
  • Digoxin
  • Lithium
  • NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) ibuprofen, naproxen, meloxicam
  • Potassium supplements or salt substitutes
  • Potassium-sparing diuretics
  • Angiotensin-converting enzymes (ACE inhibitors)
  • Angiotensin II antagonists
  • Aldosterone blockers
  • Heparin

Aldactone contraindications

You should not use Aldactone if you:

  • Are allergic to the active ingredient spironolactone
  • Have had an allergic reaction to any of the other ingredients in Aldactone
  • Have Addison’s disease (an adrenal gland disorder)
  • Have hyperkalemia (high levels of potassium)
  • Are unable to urinate
  • Are also taking eplerenone

Talk to your doctor before using Aldactone if you:

  • Are taking any of the medications that could interact with Aldactone
  • Have low levels of calcium, magnesium, sodium or any other electrolyte imbalances
  • Have kidney disease
  • Have liver disease
  • Have heart disease
  • Are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant
  • Are breastfeeding or are planning to breastfeed – This medication passes into breast milk

Aldactone is the trademark brand name for spironolactone distributed by Searle LLC, a division of Pfizer Inc. A generic version of spironolactone is available. Generic drugs are generally cheaper than brand name drugs, but you can still find Aldactone savings through NiceRx.
